How Health Insurance Really Works

Although buying the right health insurance may seem like a daunting task, health insurance policies all follow very basic and similar concepts even though specific numbers and percentages may differ. Every insurance policy between an individual/company and the insurance company is considered contractual. This contract can be renewed on a monthly or yearly basis, and a person will always be notified in advance through a member contract or an Evidence of Coverage Booklet as to the type of health care they will be receiving as well as their cost. The policy holder’s payment obligations may take many forms, however the holder should be prepared to pay a monthly premium to the insurance company for every month they wish to be covered. Once an individual is covered by a particular health insurance company, they still may need to pay a specific amount yearly or a “deductible” to the insurance company before the insurance company pays their share for medical expenses. Generally the higher the deductible is to an insurance company, the smaller the monthly premium an individual will have to pay, and vice versa. Ever since the mid 1900’s, health insurance has been a measure to help cover the cost of routine, emergency, and preventative medical procedures as well as most of the prescription drugs associated with these measures. If there is any particular service obtained outside of these procedures (such as a doctors visit), an individual may have to pay a “copayment” out of pocket for the service not covered under their policy. However, if a person does in fact need a medical procedure and it is covered under their health insurance (depending on their policy pay out limits), the insurance company will then pay for the procedure minus the individual’s deductible.
